Rountree's Fish Sound Library

Over the years I have auditioned many fish species, and some invertebrates, from many marine and freshwater habitats. This library of sounds contains representative samples specimens that I have auditioned (both silent and vocal) over the years. Most of the auditions were of fish captured in the field and hand-held to induce sound production either within a container (tank, pool, bucket) or directly in the natural water body (pond, river, estuary, ocean). In a few cases sound production was recorded from captive fishes (e.g. striped cusk-eel, brown trout). Auditioned fish include those that were recorded in situ from individuals directly observed (e.g., white sucker), or captured on video (e.g., alewife). This list also includes selected examples of sounds recorded in situ and attributed to the species based on comparison with well known sounds (e.g., oyster toadfish), or strong circumstancial evidence (e.g., Atlantic salmon). Note, that a valid scientific name could not be assigned in some cases because specimens were released live in the field or due to taxonomic uncertainty. A scientific name designated with "cf" indicates a probable, but uncertain species identification. In other cases specimens could only be assigned to a genus (e.g., Leporinus sp. 1) or a species group (e.g., Doradid_2). Species marked as silent during auditions do not indicate the species is mute, only that the specimens examined did not produce sounds which can happen for many reasons. To date I have auditioned or recorded sounds from 113 nomial species, 60 of which produced sounds. Not shown are species for which I co-authored descriptions, including Arcic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (with Marta Bolgan and colleagues), Arctic cod, Boreogadus saida and sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria (with Amalis Riera and colleagues).
